Meet Dr. Gwathmey

Expertise grounded in experience. Care centered on you.

I recently joined NYU Langone Health to lead its hip preservation and hip arthroscopy program. After more than a decade caring for patients, performing complex sports medicine procedures, and training future orthopaedic surgeons at the University of Virginia, I am excited to bring my experience and expertise to patients in New York and Westchester.

At the University of Virginia, I served as Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Vice Chair for Education, and Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program Director. Previously, I was Associate Residency Program Director, Medical Director of the Sports Medicine Clinic, and Orthopaedic Surgery Clerkship Director.

My training includes an orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Virginia; a sports medicine and shoulder surgery fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard Medical School; and additional fellowship training in hip arthroscopy at Nashville Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Clinic.

I believe the right treatment starts with listening. Whether your goal is returning to competitive sports or moving comfortably through daily life, we will review the diagnosis and discuss nonsurgical and surgical options together.

Hip

Hip Impingement & Labral Tears

Hip impingement may cause groin pain, stiffness, or catching. Treatment often begins with activity changes and focused physical therapy. Hip arthroscopy may be considered in selected patients with persistent symptoms.

Hip

Gluteal Tendon Tears & Bursitis

Pain over the outside of the hip can be related to tendon problems or inflammation around the hip. Rehabilitation is often first-line treatment; some tendon tears may benefit from surgical repair.

Knee

ACL & Meniscus Injuries

Twisting injuries can damage knee ligaments or cartilage. Treatment depends on instability, injury pattern, activity demands, and other factors. Options include rehabilitation and, in appropriate cases, reconstruction or repair.
